Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
Is there a fee?
The program is completely free. Travel expenses may be incurred during business trips, but these are fully covered by Impact ON.
What are the start and end dates?
The entire course consists of 120 hours of adventure. This includes thematic training sessions, an immersive nature retreat, and your volunteer work in the field. At the end, you’ll receive an officially recognized certificate.
The total duration of the program will depend on your schedule (only the nature retreat will take place on set dates in July). So you could finish this program as early as this summer.
The only deadline to keep in mind is March 2027, by which time you must have completed your 120 hours.
How can I be sure I'll complete my 120 hours of community service?
Every hour you spend in this program counts toward your final count.
This includes your 27 hours of training (“Strengthen Your Foundation”), your time in nature (“Affirm Your Roots”—the duration of which will depend on the length of your trip), the 8 hours of personalized support you are entitled to, and finally your community service itself (“Thrive”), which will make up the remaining hours.
Those 120 hours will fly by much faster than you think, and you’ll have your certificate in no time.
Will I receive an official certificate?
Once you have completed all 120 hours, you will receive an official certificate from the Government of Canada acknowledging your participation in a Canada Youth Service program.
In addition to being a source of great pride and proof of your “contribution to improving Canadian communities,” this certificate will be a definite asset in your job search and will demonstrate to potential employers your commitment to the community.
How will we communicate?
Throughout the program, you’ll be able to easily communicate with our team and the other participants on our dedicated Discord server.
How do I access it? Once your registration is complete and you’re ready, we’ll invite you to join the server so you can start chatting without any stress!
Strengthen Your Foundation (thematic training sessions)
When will the training sessions take place?
The training sessions will always be held in the late afternoon (4:30 p.m. | 6:00 p.m.), once a week starting in June. The exact dates will be announced shortly.
What happens if I miss a training session?
No need to worry! Live training sessions with an instructor are always more effective. If you happen to miss one due to unavailability, we’ll send you a recording so you can catch up.
Affirm Your Roots (nature retreat)
I live far from Sudbury. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it.
No problem! We handle all the logistics of your trip and cover all expenses, no matter where you live in Ontario. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
Who is in charge of the on-site arrangements?
In addition to our team, the logistics of the trip and the many on-site activities will be managed by our partner Finding Polaris, specialists in nature-based trips.
The mission of Finding Polaris Wilderness Community is to bring people together through learning about and sharing wild foods, to foster self-reliance through outdoor skills, to support young people on their personal journeys, and to give back to nature and the communities of Northern Ontario.
What will the trip be like?
Day 1 – Thursday:
Trip to Sudbury. You’ll stay at the hotel and get to know the other young people in your group.
Day 2 – Friday:
We’re all heading to the camp in the middle of the forest. You’ll be sleeping on site in a tent.
Day 3 – Saturday:
A second day of exploration featuring a variety of activities. You’re spending your second and final night out in the great outdoors.
Day 4 – Sunday:
It’s already time to go home… We’ll all head to the hotel together for one last night before you go home.
Day 5 – Monday:
It’s departure day; everyone is heading home, their heads filled with memories and enriched by what they’ve learned.
How should we plan our time in nature? Should I bring anything?
Everything is already set up for you on the website:
- The tent
You’ll share it with another youth. It will hold your bedding (sleeping bag, pillow). - Food
We provide you with three meals a day. Please let us know if you have any special dietary needs (we’ll ask you about this in the registration form) - Nature
This trip is a unique opportunity to unwind, learn more about yourself, and develop your skills. Enjoy it!
Thrive (Community Engagement)
Where can I volunteer?
Community engagement takes place right in YOUR community. We’ll help you find an organization near you where you can make a difference and learn skills that will serve you well for the rest of your journey.
How long will my community service commitment last?
The length of your commitment will depend entirely on the hours you have already worked in the program. (See the “General Information” section, under “How can I be sure I’m completing my 120 hours of service?”)
