Young people are our future, and have the potential to bring about significant change in society thanks to their creativity, energy and desire to change the world.
To support them, it’s essential to create opportunities for engagement and learning. In this sense, schools play a key role in providing stimulating educational programs and resources.
Education in Ontario isn’t limited to the classroom, however, and that’s why at Impact ON we’re working to provide learning opportunities on topics such as financial literacy and entrepreneurship.
Find out how we help young people to grow and make an impact.
In 2022, Ontario’s bilingual Young Impact Makers program offered 24 young people aged 16 to 30 the opportunity to get involved in local social projects that were close to their hearts. Comprising three days of training, roundtables, visits to social enterprises, as well as personal and skills development sessions, the program enabled each participant to devote 120 hours to their own project, while benefiting from ongoing support from Impact ON (then known as the Cooperation Council of Ontario).
Young people also had the opportunity to receive financial support for their projects and to join a network of young impact-makers in Ontario. Participants were able to either develop local individual or group initiatives, or get involved in volunteer projects with partner social enterprises, working on local societal issues.
The varied projects that resulted included a youth development program, a mental health management program for restaurant employees, a digital marketing initiative for community organizations, the creation of audio narratives for academic literature, a roving bus for the homeless, a used university book exchange platform, a mental health platform for minorities, a school canteen development program, and a community recreation center for children.
For several years now, in collaboration with our member Desjardins, we have been pursuing a financial literacy education effort aimed at helping students and young adults acquire essential financial skills. These workshops have been developed to adapt to young people’s different levels of understanding of financial concepts throughout their school career.
The essence of this initiative is to provide young people with the knowledge they need to make informed and responsible financial decisions. Starting as early as grade 4ᵉ through to grade 9ᵉ and beyond, the workshops cover key aspects of financial management, from the basics to more complex topics such as budgeting, credit management and understanding investment.
Integrating these workshops into the school curriculum provides students with practical financial skills and prepares them to make sound financial decisions throughout their lives, manage their money responsibly, and become economically literate citizens ready to face the challenges of the modern economy.
